Drum Maker

In creating this piece I took a far fetch image I had in mind and allowed it to become its own character. Something about this piece may feel broken or worn but at its core this piece is a smooth single black form which has been coated with varying layers of white and red. I hope that this piece can begin a conversation about identity and race. Masks are often used to take on another character, but what if the line between human and nature can be blurred for this character? Does this character evoke a sense of calm and order or malevolence or terror? How is the struggle of African Americans tied to the land we live on? Through this process I have enjoyed being able to use my hands to build up the form. The form is partly inspired by native architectures of the southwest. This piece is an attempt to show some of my own experiences as an African American man.
