(Re)GENERATION

An Endeavor Into the Artist Book

(RE)generation is Carl Williams’ first fully-realized artist book. This original narrative follows a black crowned and robed figure as they fight a battle against a large white figure. When Williams came to crafting this book, he felt inspired by the works of his grandfather James Walter Williams, an engineer and talented draftsman who died before Carl was born. Drawing further reference from Norman Lewis and Japanese anime, Williams seeks to associate the black protagonist with mythic heroism in the struggle against American racism. This book constitutes a prime example of Williams’ endeavors to investigate the boundaries between drawings, prints, sculpture. After flipping up the hidden flaps of the book, the viewer is presented with a three-dimensional form of a crown, a central motif in the book. By bringing imagery on the page into the 3D world, Williams hopes to place the viewer in the story. Highlighting the continuity between struggles of the past against racism and struggles of the present, Williams asks what his progenitors have left for him and what he may leave for his posterity.
